The calibration certificate belongs to the probe, not the device: look it up by its 16-character ID or QR code, and renew by plugging in a newly calibrated probe. What is in the free tier, and what does Premium Access add?

Why do cellular units carry a yearly fee when Wi-Fi units do not?

Is LF Cloud an app we have to install?

No. LF Cloud is a progressive web app: it runs in any browser on a phone, tablet, laptop, desktop or smart TV, recognises the device and lays the dashboard out to suit it. There is nothing to download from an app store and no client software for IT to approve. The interface runs in 24 languages with auto-detection and handles multiple time zones, so readings and alarms appear in each user's local time. LoggerFlex does publish one native app, the NFC tag reader on the App Store and Google Play, but it is separate from the dashboard.

Can we get the data out and into our own systems?

Yes. Reports export as PDF, Excel or CSV and can be scheduled for automatic email delivery, so a compliance file lands in an inbox without anyone signing in. For integration, LF Cloud exposes a documented REST API — pull historical or latest readings, and register and configure devices programmatically — plus outbound webhooks that post each new reading to an endpoint you control, for SCADA, BMS, ERP or a custom service. Can several people share one device with different permissions?

What do I need before I install a logger?

How do I connect a logger to Wi-Fi?

Join it from a phone, tablet or laptop. A setup page opens on its own; if it does not, browse to 8.8.8.8. Pick your 2.4 GHz network, type the password and connect. The device then pulls its logging settings and thresholds from LF Cloud. Press SYNC — left button on EDGE, bottom on BLOCK — to force an upload and confirm it is online.

What are the network requirements for a Wi-Fi logger?

2.4 GHz only — 5 GHz is not supported. That is deliberate: 2.4 GHz carries further through concrete and steel, which is what industrial sites are made of. The network must use a WPA or WPA2 pre-shared key and hand out addresses by DHCP; static IP is not supported, and the password is case-sensitive. The device cannot join a network with a captive portal or a secondary login page, which rules out most guest, hotel and campus SSIDs. Dual-band routers and mobile hotspots are fine as long as a 2.4 GHz SSID is reachable.

Do I need a gateway, hub or bridge?

No. Every EDGE and BLOCK unit reaches LF Cloud on its own — BLOCK and Wi-Fi EDGE models over your existing Wi-Fi, cellular EDGE models over their built-in modem — so there is no proprietary gateway to buy, mount or maintain and no IT project to schedule. The cellular water meter works the same way, with its own 4G modem and managed SIM. EDGE also broadcasts Bluetooth for local viewing, and that is the single exception: a LoggerFlex gateway is needed only to capture BLE data. Logging, alarms and cloud reporting all work without one.

Two independent clocks run. The recording interval decides how often the device measures and stores a reading locally; the syncing interval decides how often it uploads. A device can look quiet simply because its next scheduled upload has not happened yet. Alarms bypass the sync clock entirely — a threshold breach forces an immediate sync, drops recording to once a minute and sounds the buzzer for five seconds. Shortening the sync interval does not make alarms faster, it only costs battery. EDGE units left on USB-C power sync every 15 minutes.

What happens if the internet drops — do I lose readings?

No. The logger keeps measuring and stores every reading with its timestamp in internal memory, then uploads the whole backlog automatically the next time it connects, so the history closes with no gaps. How do I start an NFC Microthermo tag?

Press the tag's power button three times within two seconds; a red flash lasting three seconds confirms it is armed. The tag then waits 10 minutes before its first reading, which is your window to get it into the shipment or the cold room. It records every 10 minutes, holds 4,000 records — roughly four weeks — and overwrites the oldest once full. Battery life is two to three months. To read it, install the free LoggerFlex NFC app and enter an email already registered on a free LF Cloud account; the app itself has no login.

My CORE probe connected but will not take a reading. Why?

Almost always because the account has no ingredients. CORE needs at least one virtual measurement point — in LF Cloud press the + button, then click Add a virtual measurement point near the bottom of that same pop-up, and name the ingredient. Without one the probe connects and then has nothing to measure against. Two other CORE-specific points: its setup hotspot is named CORE, not Datalogger, and the Serial and DUID shown by the gear button stay on screen for only three minutes. The display sleeps to save power, so press any button to wake it.

How is the cellular water meter commissioned?

There is nothing to pair or configure on the meter itself. A licensed plumber fits it: flush the line first, point the flow arrow the way the water runs, mount it horizontally with the display up, and fit a strainer, shut-off valve and check valve upstream. Use PTFE tape or approved paste, never hemp rope — loose strands clog the meter. Check the SIGNAL screen for bars before you close the pit, because a metal lid or a deep vault blocks the modem. Your distributor or utility links the meter to your account; you sign in and it is already there.

Real-world life depends on your recording interval, sync interval, alarm activity, signal quality and ambient temperature, so we size it against your actual deployment.

What actually shortens battery life on site?

Four things. Recording and sync intervals: logging every minute and uploading every hour drains far faster than the defaults. Alarm activity, because every transmission powers the radio. Weak Wi-Fi signal, which forces the device to retransmit packets. And temperature, since extreme cold or heat reduces cell efficiency. Leave the default intervals alone unless you have a reason to change them. A shorter sync interval does not make alarms arrive faster, because an out-of-range reading never waits for a scheduled upload.

Can I run a logger on mains power instead of batteries?

Yes. EDGE Essential, Thermo, Pharma and Air run on 4 AA cells or USB-C 5 V and switch automatically based on what is available, so the cells become backup rather than the primary source. BLOCK is offered with a USB-C power option as well. One behaviour worth knowing: while an EDGE unit is plugged in it drops its sync interval to 15 minutes automatically, so your chart fills in through the day instead of once at the scheduled send. Alarm speed is unchanged either way.

If the building loses power, does monitoring stop?

Accepted Answer

No. The logger switches to its AA batteries and keeps recording and alarming. It reports the cut at its next scheduled save and sends a second message when power comes back; both arrive by email and text. The catch on a Wi-Fi unit is the network, not the logger: a mains cut usually takes the router down too, so nothing leaves the building until it returns. A cellular unit has its own connection and is unaffected. On EDGE Essential, Thermo, Pharma and Air, power loss and restoration are also alarm triggers alongside your high and low limits.

Will I be warned before the batteries go flat?

Yes. The cloud emails a low-battery alert while there is still life in the cells, not once they are dead. Which AA batteries should I fit?

On 4 x AA models, any good-quality alkaline works. Older BLOCK hardware built with only two battery slots is the exception: those units require Energizer Lithium Ultimate AA cells, and standard alkalines will not hold them up and deplete rapidly. For maximum runtime on any model, and especially in cold rooms and freezers, lithium cells are the better choice. Change all cells at the same time with fresh ones so the pack stays balanced, and never mix old and new. If you are unsure which hardware revision you have, ask your distributor.

Does a freezer or cold-room install shorten battery life?

Yes, to a degree. Extreme cold and extreme heat both reduce cell efficiency, so a unit logging inside a deep freezer will not match a bench figure. Keep the device inside its stated operating range, use lithium cells where you can, and where the enclosure allows it mount the logger outside the cold space on an external probe. One thing that is not a fault: the EDGE display pauses updates below 0 C to protect the screen, so a static display in a freezer is normal and the device is still recording.

Our site has patchy coverage. How do we stop the batteries draining?

Set the Syncing Interval to Battery Saving Mode, and if you are using the device purely as an offline logger, leave alarms switched off. An alarm raised while the device is offline makes it retry the sync and the notification repeatedly, which flattens the cells fast. You lose no history by syncing less often: the device keeps recording to internal memory with timestamps and uploads the whole gap automatically the next time it connects, so the record is reconstructed without holes.

Do the water meter and the NFC tags use AA batteries like the loggers?

No, neither takes AA cells. The Cellular Water Meter carries a sealed 3.6 V lithium cell rated for more than six years. It is not user-serviceable: when the meter raises its E1 low-battery code, a professional replaces it, because the housing has to stay sealed and you should never open it yourself. The Microthermo NFC tag runs about two to three months once activated, with a one-year shelf life before activation. It is a single-use tag, so there is nothing to charge or replace.

Can I get a battery-life figure for my exact configuration before I order?

Yes, and it is the right way to specify a fleet. Rated life is a function of your recording interval, sync interval, alarm rate, radio type, signal strength and temperature, so a single headline number tells you little on its own. No. LF Cloud runs a four-level alarm engine. Level 1 is an instant alarm the moment a reading crosses your min or max. Level 2, Persistent Condition, only fires if the reading stays out of range for a number of consecutive readings you set, which filters out door openings and defrost cycles. Level 3 is a Time-Weighted Average for long-term exposure. Level 4 is Trend Drift Detection, comparing against historical baselines to catch slow degradation. You can also set a global alarm trigger delay and require all or any parameters to be out of limits.

Will I know if a device stops reporting or loses power?

Yes. Turn on the No Connection Alarm in the device settings and LF Cloud notifies you when a device has not uploaded within the window you set. A missed scheduled upload also triggers an automatic Missing Upload email, and low-battery and external-power-change alerts are sent by email. EDGE units switch automatically between USB-C and their 4 AA cells, so they keep logging and alarming through a power cut. One caution: at a site with poor coverage an alarm raised while offline makes the device retry repeatedly and drains the battery, so use Battery Saving sync there.

How accurate are LoggerFlex loggers, and will they hold up in a regulated environment?

Accuracy is stated per model on that model's datasheet rather than as one site-wide figure, and the internal sensor and the external probes are rated differently. EDGE Essential reads ambient temperature to ±0.2 °C and humidity to ±1.8%. External digital probes are rated ±0.5 °C across −55 °C to +125 °C, with NIST-traceable versions wherever a certificate is required. Every reading is timestamped at the device and written to an immutable, audit-logged record in LF Cloud, so an auditor reviews the measurement chain itself rather than a re-keyed paper logbook. How do the NIST calibration certificates work?

The certificate belongs to the sensor, not the device. Each probe carries a 16-character identification number and a QR code. On the LF Cloud sign-in page, click Calibration Certificate Lookup and enter that number, or scan the QR code with a phone camera. No login is required, so an inspector or auditor can verify a probe independently of your account. The lookup returns the certificate's issue date and current status, Valid or Expired, and downloads the full PDF covering the calibration procedure, measurement uncertainties and traceability to national standards.

How long is a NIST certificate valid?

Three years in use, or five years on the shelf. The two figures are different and the distinction matters: five years applies to a probe still in its packaging, while the clock that governs a deployed fridge, freezer or cold room is the three-year in-use life. LF Cloud tracks the status, shows Valid or Expired in the certificate lookup, and emails a reminder before it lapses. EDGE models with a display also show NIST status on-screen with a 60-day countdown as expiry nears, so the person standing at the unit can see it without opening the dashboard.

Do I have to ship the device back to have it recalibrated?

Accepted Answer

No. Because calibration lives with the sensor, you replace the probe rather than the logger. Order a newly calibrated probe from your distributor, unplug the old one and plug the new one in. There is no RMA and no lab shipment, which is how the swap avoids monitoring downtime and keeps renewal costs low. Because LF Cloud flags an approaching expiry, a probe swap can be scheduled into a planned maintenance visit rather than handled as an urgent job after a certificate has already lapsed.

How many sensors on one device can carry a certificate?

EDGE supports optional NIST-traceable certificates for up to two external sensors per device, and EDGE Pharma ships with two NIST-traceable probes as standard. That covers two measurement points inside one unit, or a vaccine fridge plus a second refrigerated space. Do not assume a pharmacy freezer: the Pharma probe reads down to −20 °C, and a freezer that runs colder needs a different probe, so talk to us before you specify one. Each probe's certificate is looked up by its own 16-character ID, so probes are tracked and replaced independently.

What is the difference between the Pharma probe and the standard external probe?

They are not interchangeable. The NIST-traceable Pharma probe is a narrow-range probe starting at −20 °C, shipped in pairs with EDGE Pharma and sized for vaccine and pharmacy refrigerators; take its exact upper limit from the EDGE Pharma datasheet. The standard external digital probe used on EDGE Thermo and the probe-equipped BLOCK models covers −55 °C to +125 °C for freezers, cold rooms and process work. Both are rated ±0.5 °C. Pharma copy also describes an ethanol-buffered probe that tracks product temperature rather than air, so routine door openings do not raise false excursions.

Reports export to PDF, Excel or CSV and can be scheduled for automatic email delivery.

Because hardware is configured per application and sold through partners. LoggerFlex quotes hardware rather than pricing it on the site, so what you pay depends on model, probe count, connectivity, calibration certificates and quantity, and on the terms of the distributor supplying you. Distributors hold local stock and provide support, and they quote the hardware. The only figures published on loggerflex.com are LF Cloud subscription fees, which LoggerFlex bills directly. What currency are quotes in, and how are taxes and duties handled?

Your distributor handles all of it. Quotes are issued in the currency of the distributor's region, and sales tax, duties and customs appear on their invoice rather than ours. The subscription figures published on loggerflex.com are in Canadian dollars. Hardware is designed and built in Canada; your distributor confirms duty and customs handling for your market. Purchase orders, net terms and accepted payment methods are set by the distributor you buy from, so confirm them on the quote before you release the order.

It is settled in the quote. Volume, configuration and program tier are agreed per order rather than published as a price list, and distributors and OEM customers have their own arrangements. A two-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects, running from the date of shipment, on every LoggerFlex product. The Cellular Water Meter carries the same two-year term with one condition of its own — its lithium cell is sealed, so opening the housing or changing the battery yourself ends the cover.
