Optimizing Plant Growth: Understanding Vapour Pressure Deficit (VPD)

Vapour Pressure Deficit (VPD) represents the difference between the water vapor pressure in the air and the air’s saturation point, or dew point. It is calculated as Vapor Pressure (saturation) minus Vapor Pressure (air), and serves as a key indicator of the driving force behind plant transpiration through the stomata.

Unlike Relative Humidity (RH), which shows how saturated the air is at a given temperature, VPD offers deeper insight into plant-water dynamics. While RH is useful for environmental control, VPD directly reflects transpiration rates, making it a proactive parameter for plant growth optimization rather than a passive climate measure.

The ideal VPD range for most plants is between 0.4 kPa and 1.6 kPa, varying with species and growth stage. During later stages, maintaining VPD near the upper end of this range supports stronger development and productivity.
